Pain Management
At Beaufort County Medical Center we are committed to the management and relief of your pain. As a patient at BCMC you have the right to receive information about pain prevention and management. You also have the right to expect health professionals who respond quickly to reports of pain,
state-of-the-art pain management, and dedicated pain relief specialists.
To help us ensure that your pain is managed properly, ask your physician or nurse what to expect regarding pain and pain management, discuss pain relief options with your physician and nurses, work with your doctor to develop a pain management plan, ask for pain relief as soon as it first begins, tell your physician or nurse if your pain is not relieved, and tell your physician and nurse about any concerns or worries you have in regards to your pain medication.
By helping us assess your pain and through your cooperation, we will be better able to treat your pain in a timely and effective manner. Everyone reacts differently to pain and your tolerance for pain depends on a number of different things. You are the only one who truly knows how much pain you feel and what methods ease your pain.
Be honest with your doctors and nurses and do not worry about bothering staff; DO NOT TRY TO TOUGH IT OUT. You may be asked to rate your pain on a scale from 1 to 10. After pain medications are given, you will be asked again to rate your pain. When asked to describe your pain, there are several words that you can use: cramp, sharp, ache, burning, dull, constant, off-and-on, etc. Be sure to keep the staff updated on the status of your pain. Together we can make your stay at Beaufort County Medical Center and your recovery as comfortable as possible.
